Sword x Staff Skills Guide: Techniques, Charms, Pulls
How the system works
From Boltray’s Adventurer’s Handbook Vol. 1:
- Skills are Techniques (active) and Charms (passive); you mix 4 Techniques + 4 Charms.
- Upgrades use Battle Essence and apply to skill slots; “Quick Upgrade” spreads resources evenly. Because slots hold the level, swapping a skill in does not waste the upgrade.
- Boltray advertised 200+ skills before launch and “over 300” in the launch-day post; the figure depends on the count date, so we quote “200+”.
- Skills come from the Standard banner (all skills, with pity) and, after you clear Verdantglade, the Premium banner (your class’s skills only). Details: gacha & pity.
Named skills two sources agree on
| Skill | Class | What it does (cross-read) |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy Slash / Whirlwind Slash | Warrior | The early burst/AoE pair; S-tier in community Warrior tiers |
| Guard Defense / Charge Assault | Warrior | A-tier utility; Charge Assault is the engage |
| Heavy Impact | Warrior | Charged single-target hit with a brief stun; best T1 boss-killer and top reroll target |
| Mountain Collapse | Warrior | Top AoE; cast last — its knockback disrupts follow-up AoE |
| Counter Blade | Warrior | Passive damage, no rotation slot |
| Water Assault | Mage | Wide multi-hit AoE, Water synergy; top Mage reroll target |
| Gale Shield | Mage | Best early shield; Sorcerer later replaces it with Void Bubble |
| Mana Surge | Mage | General Crit passive |
Disputed (one source says lifesteal, another says DEF-reduction debuff): Blade of Lament — unconfirmed as of Aug 23, 2026. Swordxstaff.wiki also lists Iron Fortress, Leap Attack, Boiling Bloodlust and Luminous Shield for Warrior; we could not confirm those names in a second source yet.
Comparing skills yourself
The in-game Skill Test unlocks at Lv. 40 (EOG’s DPS Dummy Test guide). Use it to compare loadouts rather than trusting any tier list — including ours. Elemental Mastery math from that guide: 40 EM = +1% damage, so Gold-tier EM of 1,270 ≈ +31.75%.
Which skills to chase
- Reroll-grade: Heavy Impact (+ Counter Blade) or Water Assault (+ Water to Ice). See the reroll guide.
- Do not redeem early Skill Shard Vouchers for T1/T2 skills; hold them for T3 and beyond.
- Each new class tier opens its own premium pool — save pulls ahead of each advancement.
